Happy New Year!

Donna Fiala

Here we are already in year 2016 and it’s hard to believe it took so little time to get here! My wish is that each and every person reading this column had a wonderful holiday season filled with joy, happiness and love. It’s been a bumpy year at times, but we all made it through to … a very warm December! I cannot remember when the full month of December was ever this warm, yet many of us are really suffering from sinus problems because of the weather, and my many Christmas cactus plants have struggled to bud, much less bloom, because of the warmth of this month. Finally the fuchsia, coral and reds have somewhat opened, but the whites are hardly in bud and none have bloomed. My orchids are happily opening up and smiling at me each day. My staghorn ferns are loving the weather. My vanilla orchid vine is growing wildly up the tree (thank you Bonnie Woodward for the cutting of a lifetime!).

What are your plans to make the world a better place to live in 2016? What are your plans to bring your family closer together and enjoy each other just a little more? Have you decided what you can do to make some changes in your life to improve your attitude or your work output or reach out to friends? It’s always hard to see ourselves in others’ eyes, but we all know there is room for improvement, and that’s what I try to focus on especially at this time of year.

  • Possibly you’ve seen the start of a new building behind the Boca Bargoon building on U.S. 41 E, the business that mainly sells upholstery material and always has plenty of business, from the look of their parking lot. Well, that new building behind Boca Bargoon will be called Boca Bargoodies, and will feature decorating items such as lamps, tables, wall pictures, and assorted home-good type decorations.
  • Lucky’s Market – the new market offering naturally and organically grown produce and meats, will be opening January 13th. They have completely taken over a few storefronts in Naples Towne Centre at 3855 Tamiami Trail E. (U.S. 41 E), torn out walls, converted the buildings into one huge store, built a façade that stands out and makes a lovely statement that says we’re better than better! Their prices are reasonable, and the people they are hiring will be extremely helpful and courteous. This section of town is going to be a shopping mecca when it comes to natural and organic foods, what with Lucky’s Market, Oakes Farms on Davis Boulevard, and Fresh Market on U.S. 41 E & Collier Boulevard. With these three markets in this area, plus the new gasoline stations that have opened up in the same area, and a WaWa soon to join in the fray, there will be a whole lot of good shopping to bring people here. As it is, the price of gasoline on Pine Ridge & Airport Road is $2.17 on this day that I’m writing, and $2.09 when you get into East Naples, but further on down U.S. 41 E toward 951 it drops to $2.03, and when you hit Collier Boulevard/951 toward Marco Island the price drops down to $1.88!!! That’s almost $0.30 a gallon cheaper! I wanted to take a picture of the price because it’s been so long since I’ve seen fuel at that price that it is worth saving and remembering. The biggest problem is you can’t stockpile it and save it for the day that prices rise again. But it’s a great bargain while it lasts. I’m guessing when WaWa gets here sometime in 2016, the price war will continue to escalate. And wait until Sam’s Club opens later in 2016! With their store they usually have a Murphy’s Oil! People will want to move here just for the price of fuel.
  • Have you noticed the dirt piles along the perimeter of the Freedom Square Shopping Center? You are seeing the beginning of “Restaurant Row,” which will be one of the topics in my next column!

Until then, Happy New Year! I wish you a wonderful year ahead filled with good health, lots of happiness and feelings of love to share with your family and friends.
