Handy Household (and other) Hints

One of the reasons I was always a fan of the Olde Farmers’ Almanac, was for its Handy Hints.  I can’t claim to have discovered the following, but they work for me.

Has the grout between your tiles turned a weird shade — does it resist cleaning? This takes a bit of time, but people to whom I have recommended this hint have found it worthwhile and relatively easy to do.

Purchase flat, acrylic paint in the color you wish, and simply apply to the grout. There is no need to be extra fussy – just make sure the grout is well covered with paint. Any extra paint that sloshes over onto the tiles can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth as you work. Let it dry overnight before you attempt to wash the floor as usual. I have used this method many times with good results and it lasts until the next time someone spills something on the floor that stains the grout. Simply try to remove as much of the stain as you can, let the area dry and re-paint. It is not usually the tile part of your floor that needs deep cleaning, it is the grout. Now your tiles will clean much more easily with less effort,

One of my friends suggested the following: she has a perfectly good leather case for protecting her cell phone. However, it is simply too bulky to carry in a small evening purse. Solution: protect the phone by slipping it into a wide elastic wristband, such as one you wear for sports like tennis. It will protect the phone’s face and not take up a lot of room.
