Hands Are For Helping

By Coastal Breeze News Staff

Marco Island’s first Hands Are For Helping 5K Fun Run will take place on October 15 to benefit The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. The name of the 5K is a reference to The Shelter’s “Hands Are for Helping Not For Hitting” Program, a violence prevention program for Pre-K through first grade, where children learn non-aggressive ways to deal with anger. The Shelter serves the community in many ways, through providing an emergency shelter, transitional housing, counseling and education.

In addition to supporting fundraising efforts, one of the main goals of the Hands Are For Helping 5K Fun Run is to educate residents about The Shelter, and to also let them know that The Shelter serves Marco Island. All proceeds from the event will benefit The Shelter.

Linda Oberhaus, executive director for The Shelter, says, “We are grateful, not only for the funding, but the awareness that this race will generate. We know that domestic abuse affects all communities; it has no socio-economic, cultural, racial or class distinctions. Through our school-based prevention programs, emergency shelter, and community outreach, The Shelter is transforming lives on Marco Island and throughout Collier County.”

There are many stereotypes and misconceptions about domestic violence. Tina Nash, event organizer, reminds us that, “Domestic violence can happen to anyone in all walks of life.”

Tina tells us that the Hands Are For Helping Fun Run will be more than just a 5K, and that although domestic violence is a serious topic, this event is about family, friends and fun. Tina says, “This community event is designed to get information to the public in a fun way.”

Tina also asks that people bring toiletries to the 5K, which will be donated to The Shelter. Items needed include combs and hairbrushes, deodorant, feminine products, mouthwash, shampoo and conditioner, soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and razors. For a full list of items needed go to www.naplesshelter.org.

To register online to run or walk, visit www.naplesshelter.org/event/hands-helping-5k-fun-walkrun. Registration is $22.50 for adults, and children and teens under 18 are free. In addition to the run/walk there will be food and drinks, games, and booths that are both fun and educational.

Event sponsors include ConnectivityMe, Jessica F. Hernstadt, PA, the Law Offices of Hodge & Snyder, and the Law Offices of William G. Morris. Sponsorships are still available. For more information contact Tina Nash at klnash@live.com or 239-530-8152.
