Goodland USPS Under Review

By Natalie Strom

The United States Postal Service has implemented a new system called the POST Plan to better align its service with customer demand. In order to do this, a review of nearly 14,000 Post Offices is taking place throughout the country and the Goodland Post Office is on that list.

Those who have P.O. Boxes at the Goodland Post Office recently received a letter outlining possible changes to Postal service within the community. As the letter stated, “The Goodland Post Office was among the offices evaluated under the POST Plan criteria. The Postal Service is now soliciting your community input through the enclosed survey to help determine the best course of action for providing postal services to your community.”

The enclosed survey offered four choices for possible service change. The options were to: 1.) Keep the office open and reduce the window service hours; 2.) Provide roadside mailbox delivery; 3.) Find a suitable alternative location operated by a contractor; or 4.) Relocate P.O. Box service to a nearby Post Office.

As outlined in the letter, “the Postal Service will examine the responses and, unless the community has a strong preference (more than 60 percent) for conducting a discontinuance study for the Goodland Post Office and establishing one of the additional sources of services described below, the Postal Service intends to maintain the Goodland Post Office with six hours of window service each weekday.

Current Saturday window service hours and access to delivery receptacles will not change as a result of the POST Plan realignment of weekday window service hours.”

The USPS will be holding a meeting at the Goodland Post Office on October 17 at 6:00 PM to discuss the results of the survey and what it means for the future of the Post Office. Anyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

“I will preside over that meeting and take the public’s input,” explains Richard Barber, Postmaster of Naples and Golden Gate as well as Manager of Post Office Operations for Collier County. “The Postal Service recognizes that some changes have to be made to remain operationally sound while we continue to provide the nation’s postal service.

As of right now, the bottom line is that we want public input as to what is needed for the Goodland community.”

Barber continues, “I will have all the information I can possibly get at that meeting. All the surveys will be in and categorized. Attend the meeting and listen to what we have going on, where we stand and where we’re going to be moving towards.”

Those who utilize the Post Offices of Goodland, Ochopee, Chokoloskee and Everglades City may want to attend as the latter three locations are also being considered for changes through the POST Plan.

Mark your calendars for 6 PM on October 17, and join Goodland in the fight to keep the community’s hub – The Goodland Post Office, 427 Papaya Street – alive.
