Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Physicians Regional Healthcare System Surgeon First in Southwest Florida to Perform Incisionless Surgery

Physicians Regional-Collier Boulevard CEO C. Scott Campbell announced that the hospital is the first in southwest Florida to perform the new Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication procedure, or TIF®, to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). The surgery was successfully performed by general surgeon Thomas Bass, M.D.

“With the successful completion of this procedure, Physicians Regional-Collier Boulevard is now equipped to offer patients one of the most advanced treatments available for this disease,” said Campbell. “We are thrilled to be at the forefront of a new kind of surgery that that results in even better experiences for patients.”

Tens of millions of Americans suffer with daily heartburn or other symptoms of reflux such as regurgitation, chronic cough, hoarseness and chest discomfort. These patients have traditionally faced either the risks of invasive abdominal surgery, or a lifetime of daily reflux medications (which can help relieve heartburn symptoms but don’t solve the underlying anatomical problem or prevent further disease progression).

Now the TIF procedure, using the innovative EsophyX® device, is available as an effective treatment alternative. The procedure reconstructs the body’s natural barrier to reflux, and is performed transorally through the mouth, not through an abdominal incision. So, patients receive the same benefits as the more conventional invasive procedures without the adverse effects.

“TIF is widely recognized as the next step in the evolution of minimally invasive techniques,” said Bass. “The procedure is completely incisionless, so patients appreciate the fact that there are no visible scars or lengthy recovery time.”

Following the TIF procedure, clinical trials show that most patients can eat and drink foods they avoided for many years, and can completely discontinue daily medications for heartburn.
