Fourth of July Fireworks Ready With a Bang

By Don Manley

Marco Island’s annual Fourth of July community fireworks display is all set to go.

Also on tap are the same Independence Day festivities at Residents’ Beach that have become a tradition for island residents and visitors.

Fundraising for the fireworks display, which is put on by the City of Marco Island, was spearheaded by the Marco Island Civic Association and the Marco Island Chamber of Commerce.

Sandi Riedemann, the chamber’s executive director, said the $42,000 cost of this year’s fireworks display was secured about two weeks ago, thanks to a $21,000 contribution from the City of Marco Island, and donations of $5,000 each from MICA and the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort, Golf Club & Spa. The chamber contributed $11,000, raised through donations from clubs, organizations, businesses and individuals, she added.

“I want to thank everybody in the community who helped to sustain the level and quality of this year’s fireworks display,” said Riedemann.

Ruth McCann, the organization’s executive director, said the Residents’ Beach festivities will again include the Paradise Grill offering its regular menu at the pavilion and also grilling items under a tent on the beach. Beer and wine will be available from MICA on the beach.

She asked that people remember that Florida, Collier County and city regulations forbid glass containers at the beach, as well as personal fireworks.

MICA is the organizer of “Uncle Sam’s Sand Jam,” and their festivities are only open to MICA’s Residents’ Beach members.
