Fakahatchee strand

Patricia Huff

If you’ve ever walked along the Big Cypress Boardwalk in the Fakahatchee Strand or driven the back roads of Janes Scenic Drive, then you’re familiar with the wonders of the Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve. Guided Swamp Walks will begin in November on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Saturday of each month. Reservations are required for these adventures into the wild. Friends of the Fakahatchee members receive a discounted rate of $50 ($70 for non-members). The trips are well worth it. Phone 239-695-1023 or email islandgirl@msn.com for more information.

On Saturday, October 27, the official launch of the 2013 calendar titled “Orchids of the Fakahatchee Strand” will be held at an open house from 4:00 to 5:30 PM in Naples at the Players’ Club & Spa in Lely Resort, 8060 Grand Lely Drive. Please RSVP at 239-293-8142. You will also learn about the Cigar Orchid Restoration Project and other upcoming events. Calendars may also be ordered online at www.orchidswamp.org

Another “orchid” event is the Naples Orchid Society’s annual Fall sale in the Baker Center Gym at the Moorings Presbyterian Church, 791 Harbour Drive in Naples. There is free admission to see these beautiful orchids. Doors will open at 12 noon and close at 3:00 PM. Plan to arrive early.
