Exciting faculty additions at Marco Island Charter High School

Marco Island Academy has announced the addition of two new faculty members with impressive credentials who began teaching this week at the Charter high school. Dr. Michael H. Doherty and Mr. Robert A. Eder bring fine educational backgrounds, strong teaching credentials and unique, diverse practical experience in their respective fields to Marco Island Academy.

Michael Hugh Doherty, Ed. D., received his B.A in Biology, Minor in Chemistry from Salem State College, Salem, MA. He received a M. Ed. from Tufts University, Medford, MA and Ed. D. in Mathematics and Science Education from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, MA.

He was a teacher of Physics, Chemistry and Biology in Medford and Winthrop, MA high schools and served as Adjunct Professor, Teams Academy at University of Massachusetts. He taught A.P. science courses at Andover High School, Andover, MA and served as Assistant Department Head, Science Department at Andover. Dr. Doherty has certifications in Elementary and Secondary Education in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, General Science and English in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.

Dr. Doherty brings to his students unique experience in VSRT, Versatile System for Learning about Radio Telescopes, digital photography and engineering in Physics.

Dr. Doherty is now a resident of Naples, Fl. and very pleased to continue his career in science education at Marco Island Academy.

Robert Eder is familiar to Marco Islanders from his several years teaching 8th Grade Social Studies and Video Technology at Marco Island Charter Middle School. Mr. Eder earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Painting and Drawing from Indiana University, Bloomington and a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies/ Interdisciplinary Education from SUNY New York Empire State, NYC.

He was an art instructor at Park East High School, Spanish Harlem, New York City, NY, taught at Marco Island Charter Middle School, as noted above, and taught high school English at Balfour Education Center, Hendersonville, NC.

Mr. Eder is a professional scenic artist whose work may be seen at the EPCOT Center, Disney World in Orlando, and he has a background in scenic art in the world of Opera as well as painting props and backgrounds for commercial television. His work has been presented at shows in Manhattan at the campus of SUNY, Empire State, New York City as well as other venues in New York, Chicago and at the Gallery of Contemporary Arts in Brevard, NC. One of his works, “Homeland”, is on permanent display at Marco Island’s City Hall.

Mr. Eder has multiple licenses in Art, English and Social Studies and expects to “be able to use all of my talents by creating interdisciplinary lessons and projects that allow my students to learn and constructively utilize the curriculum to show and share their knowledge….I think that my job as an educator is to create engaging, exciting and fun lessons that help students have a well rounded knowledge and appreciation of their academic disciplines….You are going to see great things from us!”
