Domestic Animals Services Increase in Adoptions

Collier County Domestic Animals Services has seen a dramatic increase in the number of animals adopted from the shelter. Adoptions in 2015 have increased 24 percent over 2014 adoptions.

This increase is partly due to some very important community partnerships. Our partnerships with rescue organizations helped us increase the number of animals sent to these organizations by 24 percent over 2014. More than 100 animals were placed into foster homes, cared for by Collier County residents who wanted to help us. This was a 39 percent increase over 2014. And we have volunteers who donated 16,865 hours in 2015 – an estimated value of $385,075. Without their support, we wouldn’t be able to help as many animals as we have.

Collier DAS has also increased the number of promotions it offers, including this month’s promotion in which all cats are only $10 to adopt (regularly $60), and added a couple of new adoption events, including two 33-hour Adopt-a-Thon events. Collier County DAS is the only open admissions animal shelter in Collier County and receives close to 6,000 animals annually.

“We are grateful to our community partners and our volunteers for helping us find more forever homes for our animals in 2015,” said Darcy Andrade, Director of Collier County DAS. “With their help and with the promotions we have created, more animals were adopted and euthanasia rates at the shelter decreased by 44 percent in 2015.”

Come to the Naples shelter, located at 7610 Davis Blvd., between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday or to our Immokalee shelter, located at 405 Sgt. Joe Jones Road, between the hours of 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.Tuesday through Saturday and find that special cat or dog you’ve been waiting for.

With every adoption, the county includes spay/neuter surgery, Collier County license, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchip, 30 days of free pet insurance and more, a value of more than $400.
