David Brenner at Capt. Brien’s “Off the Hook Comedy Club”

By Steve Reynolds

Comedian David Brenner, the man who credits Tonight Show host Johnny Carson for his success will be appearing at Capt. Brien’s “Off the Hook” Comedy Club located on Marco Island, Florida. Brenner, a Philadelphia native, was and still is one of those comedians who like to talk about and find the humor in the evening news, sports and even weather. Brenner was strongly influenced by comics who appeared on “The Ed Sullivan Show” and developed his style as a “clean” comic.

In a recent interview with this reporter, Brenner says his style of comedy is “real life comedy, topical comedy, and says his audience will relate to his shows if they have read the USA Today newspaper on a regular basis”. Brenner says he loves to make use of newspaper and internet clippings attached to index cards that he will refer to throughout his performance and loves to use the phrase: “did you ever notice…” in his act. Brenner describes himself as “a road warrior who follows two rules: 1. go on stage when he is told to and 2. Get off the stage when he is told”. Other than that he says he is his own man. Brenner stated “On my first appearance with Johnny Carson, I was ready to give up being a comedian and I had only three dollars in my pocket.

The next day, I had over $10,000 in job offers and I took a job in Las Vegas with the assistance of comedian Buddy Hackett where I opened for singer Robert Goulet.” The rest is history with over 150 guest spots with Johnny and 75 guest hosting spots only to be surpassed by Jay Leno. I asked David how he decided he wanted to appear at Capt. Brien’s’ “Off the Hook” Comedy Club and he said he was strongly encouraged by his friend, comedian and actor Jon Lovitz, who has performed at the club. David says he looks forward to coming to Marco Island and may get a chance to do some sailing while he’s in town.
