2020 will see the Marco Island Cruise Club celebrate its 44th birthday, having been founded in 1976 and last Saturday evening they held their 43rd Change of Watch Ceremony.

The club continues with a strong membership of just around 100, many of them attending the ceremonial event installation of their new Bridge for the 2020 season here on the island. That ceremony was held at the Marco Island Yacht Club where the members would enjoy a wonderful evening of comradery with their fellow members and guests.

It was a historic occasion, as it was only the second time in the organization’s history that a Commodore would hold that position for two consecutive years, as Deena Procopio would be sworn in for a second term in the position. Prior to this, only Margie Hirschenberger had served as for two consecutive years in 2004 and 2005.

The membership is comprised of boat owners and boating enthusiasts. Although the club is active year-round, its meetings are held between January and June and resuming again between September through November. Activities include overnight cruising, day cruising trips, social events and picnics.

The 2020 Bridge consists of the following officers.

  • Deena Procopio / Commodore
  • Todd Whitney / Vice Commodore
  • Robert Madaio / Rear Commodore
  • Julia Whitney / Secretary
  • John Nevelus / Treasurer
  • Joyce Madaio / Asst. Treasurer
  • Lynn Stiles / Ex-Officio

The 2020 Board of Directors

John Marsh, Geoff Fahringer, Terry Raymer, Ed Bauersfeld, Joanne Blaauboer, Nick Cichway, Brenda McGlade, Karen Booth and Charles Schwalje.

After enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres out on the veranda the guests dined on gastronomical delights provided by Executive Chef Bob Aylwin. They were able to choose from Surf/Turf, Hula Hula Chicken or Eggplant Parmesan.

Upon completion of the ceremonial duties and dinner guests enjoyed an evening of dancing at the club and socializing until the late hours of the evening.

Should you wish more information about the organization or possible membership please view their website at or join them at one of their meetings on the 4th Tuesday of the month at the Mutual of Omaha Bank Community Room at 7 PM.
