Community Rallies to Save The Marco Players Theater

The theater has reopened and is staying alive because of the support from the Southwest Florida community and its loyal patrons. The Marco Players is grateful to announce that they will continue with the main shows for the 2020-2021 season. “We are beyond thankful that the community has rallied to keep this theater open,” says President Beverly Dahlstrom.

Last March when the pandemic hit, the theater knew it would be in danger of running out of funds needed to begin its 47th season and announced the “Staying Alive Campaign” in May 2020 with a goal of raising $50,000 to open for the 2020-2021 season. As part of the campaign, the theater produced the Staying Alive Interview Series, a reading of the world premiere “The Spirit of Bay Manor” by Joe Simonelli and a Zoom production of “Behind the Scenes” by Randall Kenneth Jones.

“We were devastated in early November when we had only raised half of what we needed to open for the 2020-2021 season. Since then, our loyal supporters stepped up and literally saved this theater from closing on November 30. We are extremely grateful to all of them,” says Beverly Dahlstrom.

With reduced ticket sales due to the pandemic and long-term loyal patrons postponing their seasonal return to Southwest Florida, The Marco Players continues to have challenges, however, they will stay open if the community is willing to keep the theater afloat for the remainder of the 2020-2021 season. To do this, they are introducing an interim campaign, “Staying Afloat” which will be in place until February.

The theater, staff and Board are determined to save this venue that consistently brings creativity and joy into the lives of our actors, volunteers and patrons. “We won’t let this virus take away your joy, let’s keep this theater open!” says Beverly Dahlstrom.

Speaking of joy, “The Farce Day of Christmas” by Ken Levine (Emmy Award-winning writer known for “M*A*S*H,” “Cheers,” “Frasier”) is on stage November 25 – December 13, 2020. This comedy, directed by Paula Keenan, includes a terrific cast: Gregg Birr (Gary), Ty Szumigala (Dad), Matt Flynn (Chip), Sharon Iserm (Wendy), Kay Mayr (Mom) and Emery Pulse (Karen). Tickets are $38.50 each and on sale at We’re staying safe by distanced seating, sanitizing and masking.

Again, The Marco Players offer heartfelt thanks to all their donors, both corporate and private, who have generously contributed during the past 8 difficult months.
