Collier EMS Interim Chief Appointed

Collier County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Battalion Chief Walter Kopka is being appointed to the position of Director – EMS Operations. In addition, Mr. Kopka will serve as interim EMS chief until a permanent successor is hired. Current EMS Chief Jeff Page announced his retirement last month after 30 years with the county. Chief Page’s final day at EMS will be August 26. The changes within EMS were announced today by County Manager Leo Ochs.

“Battalion Chief Kopka has dedicated more than 25 years of service to Collier County EMS and I am confident that during this transitional period he will provide the leadership necessary to ensure the continuity of the excellent quality of service Collier County residents have come to expect from EMS,” said County Manager Ochs.

Battalion Chief Kopka has been with EMS since April 1986 when he was hired as an Emergency Medical Technician. Since that time, he has served in the capacity of Paramedic, Flight Paramedic, Flight Medic Captain, Training Captain and most recently, Battalion Chief – a position he has held since 2000.

Mr. Kopka holds an Associate of Science Degree in EMS Technology from Edison College. He has also attained a Law Enforcement Officer Certification, holds a State of Florida Firefighter Certification and just returned from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School for Senior Executives in State and Local Government where he completed a three-week program designed to provide a hands-on learning experience to help public officials meet the changing needs of their constituents and communities.

Recruitment begins on Friday, August 12, 2011 to select a new EMS Chief. This position will be open to both internal and external candidates and will be posted through Friday, September 2, 2011 at 5 p.m. In addition to advertisement on the County’s website and
