City Council Update

In his weekly review to residents, City Manager Steve Thompson said staff will prepare a report of water flow and fire hydrant placement for a work session review later this spring. The discussions will include  “health issues raised with limited flow through small water lines, the spacing of hydrants during the initial development of the City, and the on-going replacement of old and malfunctioning hydrants.” Thompson said  there seems to be no crisis requiring immediate action, but there may be  long- term issues requiring long-term financing and correction. An analysis of non-capital alternatives to meet fire needs is in order, as well as other considerations that may come to light for review at the same time, allowing City Council more of a strategic perspective to consider this and other major expenses. At the end of the presentation City staff will refer this to the new Utilities Advisory Board for consideration after the rate structure and more pressing issues are resolved.

Following the last City Council meeting, it was also recommended that Council consider the study of impact fees, noting how other municipalities handle them.

Some future discussions for City Council will include timing for installing the pilings for the new Jolley Bridge expansion, results of the ongoing study for a Community Redevelopment Area (CRA) grant for improvements to Town Center, and the Smokehouse Bay Bridge plans and expenses.
