A sharp eye by a passing motorist and a prompt response by Marco Island P.D. helped identify a flagrant violation of a number of environmental regulations and those responsible for those actions.
Rather than cleaning up painting materials in the proper manner, employees of a painting contractor chose to go into a local swale area to clean their brushes and other equipment with no regard to the impact that action would have on the environment and wildlife in the area.
Marco Island P.D. is in the process of following up on the incident and will pursue the violators for their actions. However, citizens should be aware that they may place themselves in harm’s way by not contacting the local law enforcement agency of such a violation immediately upon discovering it in progress.
Bob Roth, a former member of the City’s Waterways Committee, commented that this type of violation is very serious. “This is a flagrant violation of the U.S. Clean Water Act and Marco Island’s MS4 Illicit Discharge Regulations.” Roth himself is a professional engineer dealing in these matters.
The city is presently concentrating on the discovery of potential pollutants within the waterways in and around the island community.
