Christmas Celebrations in High Gear

Photos by Steve Stefanides

December 1 was a big day for the Christmas Island Style Committee as they gathered with volunteers from the Italian American Society, Newcomers Club, Rotary, LCEC, Condee Cooling and Electric, and the Marco Island Fire/Rescue for assembly of not one, but two community Christmas trees their committee has purchased during the last three years through donations obtained from within the community.

“We all work hard throughout the year, so itreally fun to see so many community supporters come out and help us get this job done – especially Condee Cooling and Electric. Without their expertise, the work would be very difficult to accomplish,” said Wanda Burson, a member of the committee.

The trees at both Veterans Community Park and at the entrance to the island at Founders Park have both been assembled and lit this last week. The Christmas Island Style Committee and the City of Marco Island encourage residents and guests to visit Veterans Community Park to view that tree and just spend some time by it as we all reflect on the many blessings of the season.

Christmas Island Style over the years has put on many of the fun and festive holiday events which surround the Christmas Holiday Season. This year has seen a reduction in the larger gatherings due to the effects of COVID and out of a sense of caution, but the committee is forging ahead in providing many opportunities to allow the community to enjoy the sights and sounds of Christmas.

The festive Christmas Island Style holiday banners have been hung along Collier Boulevard, and more than 60 lighted angels have been delivered to new owners to light up their yards, condominiums and businesses to join with hundreds of others.

One of the special offerings each year provided by the Christmas Island Style Committee is a small custom Christmas Ornament specific to Marco Island. “That ornament is designed as part of a competition among local school children and manufactured for us. They are available at local retail outlets around the island. Those outlets can be found at our website at www.christmasislandstyle.com,” said committee member Barbara Dasti.

Last week, the annual Canine Holiday Pet Parade was sponsored and held at the Esplanade, allowing pet owners and residents to come out and enjoy watching their favorite fourlegged family members strut their stuff. “We are especially thankful for the hospitality and community spirit displayed by the staff and servers at CJ’s on the Bay to host this event for the last 11 years,” said Susan Purvis, a member of the committee who helped to create the idea of the Canine Parade with her late husband Wayne Purvis.

On September 11 at 6pm, a special holiday Christmas movie will be shown at Veterans Community Park. This event being provided by the Chamber of Commerce and is sponsored by Siegel Dentistry along with Christmas Island Style. Viewers are encouraged to arrive early for a good spot and enjoy an evening out with the family.

On September 18, the Christmas Island Style Committee will be sponsoring another Christmas movie in Veterans Park under the glow of the Christmas Tree for families to enjoy. This event is in conjunction with the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. Like the event on the 11th, the movie will begin at 6pm and attendees are encouraged to come early and bring a chair and blanket to enjoy the show.

On December 19, the annual Christmas Island Style Boat Parade will be held. It will kick off sharply at 6pm. There is still time to enter a boat by visiting the website at www.christmasislandstyle.com or by calling Gene Burson, director of the event, at 239-945-1775. A map of the route can be found at the CIS website. Deck out your craft and enjoy your cruise through the Marco waterways with some of your close friends and enjoy the countless choruses of Christmas greetings from the homes and condo complexes you pass.

The finale of the organized events for Christmas Island Style will be a stationary drivethrough of approximately two dozen floats within Veterans Park. The holiday floats will be assembled to allow attendees to drive through the parking lot to view the floats and displays of organizations that normally would march along San Marco Road. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there to greet your children and say hello as attendees safely ride through the parking lot viewing the displays. Due to safety concerns, no walkers will be permitted.

Christmas Island Style suggests that all who drive through bring a non-perishable item to donate to the Our Daily Food Pantry who will be in attendance. They will have elves at the ready to collect those wonderful donations.

The drive-through will commence sharply at 6:30pm and will continue until 8:30pm. Attendees are requested to enter Park Avenue from Collier Boulevard, drive past the tree and proceed down Park Avenue toward Bald Eagle until they reach the entry way to Veterans Community Park. They will be directed from that point. No entry will be allowed from Elkcam Circle, which will be utilized as an exit only.

If you have questions, send an email to christmasislandstyle@gmail.com or call 239-2508348. The group is still accepting applications for placement of floats.
