Chamber Notes

Wow, what a year so far! I hope that you all agree it has been a great “season” for most of our businesses and retailers with record numbers of visitors finding their way to our beautiful Island this winter. As we approach our “summer season”, it is expected that our popularity will continue with the coming months being prime “holiday season” for our international visitors and summer being time for family travel.

It hasn’t hurt that Marco Island has been in the news repeatedly over the past few months. In February, Marco Island was included in the newly released book “100 Places That Can Change Your Child’s Life” by National Geographic Senior Travel Writer, Keith Bellows. We were fortunate to get to meet Mr. Bellows and had a full house for his book signing at Sunshine Booksellers South on March 25th. His excellent read features chamber member “The Dolphin Explorer” which offers guests a 3-hour boat tour and the opportunity to not only view and learn about our neighborhood dolphin population and sea life, but assist in the research efforts of the vessel. If you have not been aboard – you should check it out! The Dolphin Explorer departs from Rose Marina at 951 Bald Eagle Drive. Visit for ticket information.

Not long after Mr. Bellows’ visit, it was announced that Marco Island was voted #3 in Trip Advisor® Traveler’s Choice® 2013 of the “TOP 10 ISLANDS IN THE UNITED STATES”. Ranked behind the San Juan Islands in Washington state, and Kauai, Hawaii; we’ve gone out on a limb to call Marco the “#1 US Island East of the Rockies”.

In February we held the first ever “Souper Bowl Marco” and the 6th Annual “Wet Paint Live”. Both of these chamber events raised thousands of dollars to benefit scholarships for deserving area high school seniors. Scholarship applications are all in, and the chamber’s education committee is in the process of reviewing those applications now. On Wednesday, May 22nd, we will present the scholarships at our monthly “After Five” to be held at CJ’s on the Bay. This “After Five” will be a ‘Barbeque on the Bay’ with CJ’s Chef Laura cooking up a Barbeque feast from 5:30PM – 7PM. All are invited to attend this great annual event. Chamber Members admission is $5, Non-Members $10, President’s Club members are FREE!

Also upcoming is our annual “Glory of the Grape” taking place on Sunday, June 9th at 6PM. Coincidentally, this event is also at CJ’s on the Bay! This event is a wine tasting paired with heavy hors d’oeuvres to complement each, and includes a live auction of summer inspired gifts. Co-sponsored by the Marco Eagle, tickets are $50 per person and can be purchased at the chamber office. Proceeds from this event benefit the Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce. Always well attended, this is a fabulous evening of good wine, great food, friends and FUN! We are currently seeking sponsors (from $50 to $250) and businesses to donate goods/services for the auction at this event. Visit for complete sponsorship information or call Katie at 239-394-7549.

We continue to grow and are proud to welcome TWENTY new members to the Marco Island Area Chamber of Commerce so far in 2013. They are:
