“It’s always tea time!” as the Mad Hatter says. The City of Marco Island Parks and Recreation hosted its annual Mad Hatter Tea Party the day before Mother’s Day and local moms and their children celebrated in style.
The “Alice in Wonderland” themed Mother’s Day tea party allowed moms and their children to participate in arts and crafts, sip tea, and eat delicious scones and snacks. This event is open to mothers, fathers, grandparents, aunts and uncles, teens and children.
“We just decided that we would start celebrating Mother’s Day with a tea party and then of course you have to have the focus on the kids,” Dial stated. “We pulled out the Mad Hatter tea party idea so it can be crazy and all the kids get an opportunity to dress up and learn about the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ characters.”
This year seven stations were set up in order to allow the children to work on crafts without waiting in line. Every year new crafts are available to keep the theme fresh. The tea time kick-off was toward the end of the event, so every guest had an opportunity to create a homemade keepsake from Wonderland. Senior Park Attendant Heather Lopez and Natasha Gengenbach helped set up the event from start to finish, since its planning stages in late March.
Marco Island Academy Key Club members were there dressed in character to assist each station as needed. The volunteers helped the parents and kids on their crafts and provided extra instruction. With the younger children, a little help goes a long way.
“More than anything, I would like to thank the community for allowing us to have this new community center to update all of our programming,” Dial commented. “With the new beautiful facility, it has just allowed us to be more creative.”
