One of the more dangerous functions of boating, especially for boats with enclosed cabins and engine compartments, is fueling.
Prior to fueling, get all passengers off the boat, extinguish cigarettes, cigars, and pipes, turn off all electrical equipment, and close all hatches and ports.
During fueling, keep the fuel nozzle in contact with the edge of the tank.
After fueling, open ports and hatches, run the blower for a minimum of four minutes, and check the bilges for fuel vapors before starting the engine.
To refuel portable tanks remove them from the boat.
