Can You Really Boost Your Metabolism?

B11-CBN-4-17-15-18I’m sure you’ve read the claims splashed across fitness magazines and various canisters of green tea: “fire up your metabolism” reads Herbalife’s Ultimate Thermofit or “naturally boosts metabolism – no jitters” reads Garden of Life’s fucoThin Green supplement.

Sounds legit, right? Sadly it’s not. The scary truth is that these supplement companies need no evidence whatsoever that what they claim is actually true. It’s frustrating for the consumer who wastes their hard-earned cash on flimsy statements, which further demonstrates the rule of thumb that if something sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

Susan Roberts of Tufts University states that “Magazines and supplements love to talk about ways to boost your metabolism. But you can eat a brownie with 700 calories in about 10 seconds, and there is nothing that you can remotely do to change your metabolism by anywhere near that much, except to give up your job and spend all your day in the gym.”

Some over-substantiated claims include green tea, green tea extract, and caffeine. All have had individual or even combined studies promising weight



loss by burning calories from consumption. At the end of the day when the studies are completed none of the above made any difference in weight.

What does?

Exercise! The truth is that the more muscle you have the better your metabolic rate is because muscle burns more calories than fat. It doesn’t make a huge difference as in you can eat anything you want, but it does matter. Roberts notes that “weight control is dominated by how many calories you eat. That’s the honest truth.”

So don’t look for a quick fix and pop a pill or drink an energy drink—save your money and invest in clean eats and regular workouts. The consistency will give you the results you’re seeking without the confusion and empty promises.
