B19-CBN-05-13-16-2Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron wants to remind islanders to always follow safe boating practices, including always wearing life jackets and becoming educated on water safety.

Always Wear Your Life Jacket

Accidents can happen without warning. There’s rarely time to reach stowed life jackets.

It is estimated that approximately 86% of recreational boaters that drowned were not wearing their life jackets. Overall, approximately 400 lives could have been saved if boaters had worn their life jackets.

That’s why the United States Power Squadrons® recommend that boaters always wear a properly fitting U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket when on the water.

The latest life jackets come in a variety of shapes, colors, and sizes, and some are even inflatable. So there is no excuse not to wear a life jacket while boating.

You’re in Command

Nothing better than boating as a way to relax, have fun, enjoy the

water, and bring friends and family together.

That is why it’s so tragic when a recreational boating outing, angling, paddling, or just cruising, ends with an accident.

Each year, on average, two boaters are killed on American waterways every day. Thousands of others are injured. Waterways are second only to highways as the scene of accidental deaths.

Too often these accidents happen when normally responsible, conscientious people make the serious mistake of assuming that their experience or equipment is enough to keep them and their passengers safe.

As a boat owner or operator, YOU are responsible for your safety, the safety of your passengers, and the safety of other boaters.

That’s why the United States Power Squadrons® remind you: You’re in Command.

To learn confident and safe boating, contact the Marco Island Sail and Power Squadron at 239-393-0150, your local unit of the United States Power Squadrons®, or the national website at Visit for more information.
