If a neighbor’s garden moves you to pause and admire its beauty whenever you pass it, consider nominating it for the annual Marco in Bloom award. Each year, the city’s Beautification Advisory Committee searches out lovely examples among private residences, businesses, organizations and even entire neighborhoods who make the island a more beautiful place through their use of green space.
Last year’s winner’s were: The Marco Island Historical Museum, The Summit condominium, The Esplanade, Butterfly Court (for a cul-de-sac) and 660 S. Barfield Drive.
The deadline for nominations is March 20th. To nominate a property, be prepared to describe in 100 words why the property deserves to be recognized. Three photos of the property are required. The Beautification Advisory Committee looks at several factors when determining the winners: use of native and water-wise materials, use of color, visibility, and creativity.
Winners will be announced on April 1st and are recognized at the city council meeting on that date.
You can find an online application on the city’s website, under Beautification Committee, or call the Parks and Recreation Department at 239-389-5035.
