On Sunday, March 18th, the City of Marco Island’s Beach Advisory Committee (BAC) and Publix sponsored the monthly beach clean-up. Starting at 8 AM at the South Beach boardwalk, thirty-five (35) volunteers joined BAC Chairman and Publix Manager Kevin Donlan to clean up the beach. The volunteers included Publix employees and family members. Participants were given a t-shirt for their hard work! Publix also donated bottled water, gloves and trash bags for the event. Approximately thirty (30) very full bags of trash were collected. Trash included lots of beer cans and bottles, liquor bottles, plastic bags, bottle caps, and over four hundred (400) disposable straws. All was removed from the Marco Island beach in a few hours’ time. Bernardo Bezos, BAC member and Marco Island Civic Association (MICA) member, donated his time and the MICA beach vehicle to assist the volunteers and cart off the full bags of trash. George Schmidt, BAC member, also volunteered for the beach clean-up. If you, your group or business would like to sponsor and/or participate in a Marco Island beach clean-up, please contact Nancy Richie, Environmental Specialist, City of Marco Island at 239-389-5003 or email@example.com.
