Are You a CocoNut?

Crystal Manjarres

Have you ever seen the movie “My Big Fat Greek Wedding?” If not, you’re missing out! If so, you’ll remember how the dad’s remedy for everything under the sun was dousing it with a dash of Windex.

This is precisely how I am with coconut oil – seriously! There are SO MANY uses for it it’s ridiculous! Here are some of my favorite ways to use it:

As a moisturizer: I get compliments on my skin ALL THE TIME – no lie. People are shocked when I tell them that I only use coconut oil. I use raw, organic, cold-pressed coconut oil immediately after showering and throughout the day in place of lotion. I even use it on the baby’s skin.

In my oatmeal: I once tried it in my cold protein shake, forgetting that it is solid at room temperature and colder. Surprise! I had little coconut “beads” floating around. After that I preferred to use it for cooking and mixing it in with my morning oats. Not only is it a great source of energy, but studies have shown it’s comparable to blueberries when it comes to decreasing your risk of Alzheimer’s disease due to its anti-inflammatory properties.

As a massage oil: Simply add it to skin and knead away!

In my hair: I coat my hair in it, wrap it up and let it sit. For a healthy hair treatment, add a shower cap and leave it on for a few hours to let it sink in, or for a more heavy duty conditioner I’ll sleep in it overnight and rinse it out in the morning.

As an eye make-up remover: enough said!

To “lighten” age spots: I’ll let you know if there is indeed truth to this one. Granted, I only have a few freckles, but I use it anyway, so if it prevents age spots and additional freckles, double bonus!

As a frizz buster: dab a TINY amount onto your palm and lightly rub your hands through your hair to combat the Florida frizz. A heavy hand will land you looking more like Danny from Grease than that enviable Pantene Pro V celebrity.

A metabolism booster: Yep, you heard that right! I saved the best for last; it’s high Lauric acid and MCFA content stokes your metabolism with only the lift of a spoon! It’s a lot lighter than a dumbbell, huh? But still lift those weights – it only enhances your hard work in the gym, not replaces it.

Now that you know how awesome coconut oil is, I hope that you’ll feel inspired to use it on a regular basis. There are so many more uses for it; let me know some fun ways that you like to incorporate coconut oil into your diet. I love hearing from y’all.
