ACS Kicks Off Relay For Life

On Oct. 28, the Marco Lutheran Church was illuminated as a beacon of hope and celebration of life. The Marco Island unit of the American Cancer Society hosted their kickoff party of the 2015 Relay For Life, “One World One Hope,” presented by Robert J. Flugger. Approximately 50 attendees were greeted by a path of shining luminaria leading the way to a room decorated with purple and white balloons where they enjoyed refreshments and an audiovisual presentation of the 2014 Relay For Life of Marco Island.

The 2015 Relay For Life Chair Jamie Bergen welcomed the audience and opened the program with an informational presentation of the event, including changes that are being made for 2015. In the past, the Relay For Life was a 24-hour event. In 2015, the event will be held for 12 hours, making it more conducive to community and family participation.

Also, in the past, many have had the misconception that the Relay For Life is a competitive running event similar to

a 5K or even a marathon. It is not. It is a walking event in which anyone can participate. Even if you can’t walk, there are other ways to participate.

Adding to the kickoff presentation were Fund the Cure Lead Loni Atton; Experience Lead Raul Medina; and People Lead Jessica Hernstadt. Breast cancer survivor Maureen Chodaba shared the story of her family’s fight against cancer beginning with her grandmother in 1968 and continuing triumphantly with herself and her brothers to this day.

The Relay For Life is a team-oriented fundraising event of the American Cancer Society celebrating its 30-year anniversary in 2015. The Marco Island unit of the American Cancer Society and the committee of the 2015 Relay For Life of Marco Island, “One World One Hope”, invite the entire community to become involved. The event will held April 18, 2015, from 11 AM-11 PM at Mackle Park.
