A Salute To Our Volunteers

Lisa Honig

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the American Cancer Society. Without our volunteers here on Marco Island there would be no events such as the Imagination Ball and Relay For Life nor would we be able to support other events such as Shoot Down Kids Cancer, The Walkers Marine Fishing Tournament or the upcoming Luau to support Breast Cancer research. With only two people in our local office we rely on our volunteer board and committees to be our advocates in the community and to spread the word about all the good things that the American Cancer Society does to finish the fight and enable more people to celebrate more birthdays.

Our volunteers are our partners who lend their time, talent, and expertise in a meaningful way towards our mission. This includes: governance volunteers (board members), volunteers who focus on single issues, episodic volunteers, repeat annual event volunteers, and other emerging partners in systems and collaborations. Our volunteers are critical to the success of our unit here in Marco Island and by working together we can make an impact on the cancer burden and make a difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families.

As the new Executive Director all of my expectations have been exceeded with regards to our volunteers. Without exception they are the most passionate, engaged and hard-working people I have ever had the pleasure to work with anywhere. They have taken the time to show me the ropes and I am so grateful to them for their support and complete commitment to our community and our events. Their willingness to just do what it takes to get the job done leaves me speechless and thank you never seems to be enough. My first event season is now behind me and I am already looking forward to our events being even bigger and better next year and to working with our volunteers to make it happen!

In order to continue this great momentum and grow our organization we need to constantly add to our volunteer team and I would like to extend an invitation to our wonderful and philanthropic Marco Island community to come by and see what we have to offer. We have a wide variety of volunteer opportunities and there is something for everyone depending on time available, skills, and personal preference. We are currently recruiting for Relay For Life Committee Chairs and members, Imagination Ball Committee Chairs and members, Luau Committee members, Road to Recovery drivers and general office help. We also support the Collier County ‘Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk’ held in downtown Naples. They are now looking for committee members and volunteers to help on the day of the event which is October 19, 2013. If you are passionate about finding a cure and want to donate your time to the American Cancer Society, please contact us here in the Marco Island office at your earliest convenience.

In closing, thank you! Thank you to all of our fabulous volunteers for all you have accomplished in this past year. Thank you to Marco Island and all of our residents, businesses and visitors for your support. Thank you in advance to those of you who are considering becoming a volunteer and for taking the first step to joining our wonderful team. We look forward to meeting you!
