A Race For Charity

Throughout Marco Island, people donned their best hats and gathered at their favorite spots to take a shot at picking the next Kentucky Derby winner.

Keith and Jennifer Reeves, owners of the Sunset Grille at the Apollo Condominiums on South Collier Boulevard, closed the popular eatery to support the Optimist Club of Marco Island. The club, along with Reeves and his wife, held a combined celebration for the yearly run of the Derby along with Cinco de Mayo.

The gathering of islanders helped to raise monies for the Optimist Club, which will use the funds to support children’s sports activities on the island. Both Reeves and his wife are major supporters of events for children throughout the community. “Keith and Jen have always been great to us and the local schools when it comes to supporting activities for the children on Marco,” said Meg Bonos, president of the local Optimist Club.

In 2008, the organization was founded on the island to help provide for organized sports activities for the children of Marco. Some of the activities they run include flag football, basketball and soccer, for a wide range of age specific teams and genders. The organization is run by volunteers, with all-volunteer coaches and support staff.

After giving a donation at the door, attendees could bid on a number of silent auction items, pick their favorite horse to win, and dine on a complimentary buffet.

The event helped to raise several thousand dollars for the club and the support of children’s sports on the island. Should you wish to donate or volunteer to help with the Optimist Club please visit their website at Coaches, volunteers and donations are always needed.
