1st Annual Marco Island Economic Summit

The 1st Annual Marco Island Economic Summit, hosted by the Marco Island Area Association of Realtors® (MIAAOR), will be held on Thursday, October 29, 2015 from 1:00 – 4:00 PM at the Rose Auditorium at the Marco Island Historical Society.

Attendees will hear the latest Marco Island real estate statistics, as well as an economic forecast for Southwest Florida.

MIAAOR President-elect Dick Shanahan spoke to us about the timeliness of this first-ever Marco Island Economic Summit, and the educational benefits it brings to the public. He tells us that the Economic Summit offers a unique learning opportunity – not just for those in the real estate business – but also for “anybody who is in business, planning to expand their business, and for the general public.”

Four distinguished speakers, established leaders in their fields and local experts, will give presentations:

  • Dr. Christopher Westley, Director, Regional Economic Research Institute and Professor of Economics at Florida Gulf Coast University.

Dr. Westley received his Ph. D. in economics from Auburn University, Alabama. A prolific writer, since receiving his Ph. D. in 2000, he has published more than 100 economics columns. His writing has appeared in Investor’s Business Daily, the Christian Science Monitor, and several business and policy journals throughout the United States. Dr. Westley is a member of the American Economics Association, the Western Economics Association and the Public Choice Society. He also serves as an Associated Scholar at the Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama, an adjunct faculty member for the Action Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and editor of the Journal of Business Inquiry.

  • Dr. Jack Wert, Executive Director, Collier County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Dr. Wert is a graduate of Miami University, Oxford, Ohio and has more than 30 years of experience in marketing, advertising and promotion in the tourism industry. Dr. Wert formed the Naples, Marco Island, Everglades Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) in 2002, as the official tourism destination marketing organization for Collier County. He holds the designation of Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) and Professional Destination Manager (PDM). A resident of Florida for 25 years, Dr. Wert



is past chairman of the Florida Association of CVB’s, Chairman of the Destination Marketing Association International Accreditation Board, and on the advisory boards for the Collier County United Arts Council, Florida Gulf Coast University Resort & Hospitality School and the Miami Branch of the Federal Reserve.

  • Cindy Carroll, SRA, Carroll & Carroll Real Estate Appraisers & Consultants.

Ms. Carroll holds the SRA (Senior Residential Appraiser) designation from the Appraisal Institute. She is a recognized industry leader and has become a noted speaker on the Southwest Florida real estate market. After becoming a full-time appraiser with her company in 1986, in 2002, she became vice president and manager of the residential division, her current position. Her practice includes assignments for mortgage lending, buy/sell decisions, pre-listing evaluations, litigation, and real estate structuring and settlement. She has served on the board of directors of the West Coast Florida Chapter of the Appraisal Institute and the Collier County Bar Association’s Foreclosure Task Force. She is a member of the Women’s Council and the Media Relations Committee of the Naples Area Board of Realtors.

  • Rick Medwedeff, General Manager, Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort & Spa.

Mr. Medwedeff graduated from the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting. A 33-year veteran of the hospitality industry, he has been General Manager of the Marco Island Marriott Beach Resort & Spa since 2005. This year, he will be celebrating an 18-year career at the Marco Island Marriott. He serves as a board member of the Collier County Tourist Development Council, the Collier County Lodging & Tourism Alliance and the Marco Island American Cancer Society. He also serves as an advisory board member of the Florida Gulf Coast University Hospitality School and the Marco Island Academy.

Dick Shanahan tells us that all residents, not just realtors, will be “well-served to be there.”
